What would you do? - 11-11-2009, 08:04 PM

Just some dialog to gather your thoughts. I work for a corporation the is going to be holding a conference. One of our marketing reps asked if I could do the photography. He ask what my rate for the day would be. So I quoted a figure that was not any more than a regular day of work for me. It was a low figure. So I received an email that they had decided to go another direction related to budget and that he would take photos himself. I really kind of wanted some exposure and to bump my portfolio. This conference would be a 10hr day, photos of keynotes ex-cetera. Would you offer to do this pro-bono?, or not do it at all?

Has signs of a train wreck. Might want to pass. Your time and more importantly, your talent have value and they don't seem to think so IMHO.

You may be an immensely talented photographer (haven't seen any of your work yet), but when someone from the company comes to an employee to "hire" that person for extra work, the goal in many cases is to get a deal. Particularly that would be the case if it was an event where that employee's attendance was mandatory anyway, which might not be the situation in this case.

I've covered a few conferences. When there are dynamic displays or people or emotions, it's possible to yield portfolio-grade shots. The rest of the time it's an incredibly boring parade of talking heads and people in suits. I got lucky at one two-day conference I covered last year, as there were some emotions and touching moments (attendees mostly comprised bone marrow transplant patients and medical professionals). Otherwise, not much room for creativity or fun! Don't feel bad about not landing the "job."
