Head shot pricing - 12-10-2009, 07:43 PM

I've got no idea how to price the session and how to handle usage fees. This individual needs the head shot for use on their business card. Any advice is much appreciated.

I'll assume you have a DBA, a tax ID number, an EIN, liability insurance, credentials, etc. ?? or are you going into business without the requisite legalities ?

Captain Tom,
Why would you ever think he was not up to date on all things legal, after all he has a web site and he is on TPF, doesn't that say to the world that you are a professional

Anything less than a hundred bucks and you are still an amateur. $100.00 - $150.00 beginning pro. $150.00 & up a real pro.

Shoot at his office? Shoot at your studio space? Using pro end lighting equipment (norman/broncolor/hensel/novatron/photogenic/etc) Mid level (allien bee/etc), off camera flash with triggers/on camera flash? Using backdrops? Several poses? etc

Don gave you a good ballpark to start.

If the customer flinches at over $75 ask him what his time is worth and does he do anything for others an expect to make less than $75. (also let him realize that after you shoot that there will be post production work done to the shots and that he may want to buy some larger prints to put in his office or possibley use in an on line or print advertisment).

Remember to UP Sale the client.

If you categorize someone based on the price they charge, I think you're missing the boat. If there was an implied emotocon, sorry I missed it.

A real pro charges a price appropriate for his market segment & demand. If you charge $500 in a $100 market, the only thing you are a professional at is becoming bankrupt. This holds true if you're selling bread or ink on paper.
