Mission statement - 01-03-2010, 12:19 PM

What is your mission statement?
If you don't have one have you thought about it?
If you do have one how did you come up with it?
This is one of my assignments I am working on now :D

I don't know, mission statements are kinda like old school for me. And should be reserved for altruistic endeavors not when in the business of making money. But that's just my opinion.

Unless, of course, one is doing photography for altruistic reasons hehehe.

For a non-"new idea" company like a photography service, a mission statement, when needed (i.e. for a business plan for a SBA loan) can be fairly basic like:
"ABC Photography will provide superior photography services to our clients in a customer orientated manner."

Fancy mission statements are only needed when you are providing something novel that is not already being done by most other similar businesses. An example of a novel photography endeavor is NILMDTS.

I do have some sort of explanation of my photography on my website, not sure it's a mission statement, or an artist statement, or something in between. But I try to explain both why I photograph and what my photography is about.

Photography is very fulfilling to me. I enjoy the creative energy required to design visual concepts, the problem-solving skills needed to implement those visual ideas, and the magic human interaction that takes place when multiple people get together to create an image. I truly love working with light, forming and shaping it to convey emotion and interest. Whether the image creation takes place in the studio or on location, light becomes my raw material in the creative process, and the essential defining characteristic of my photographs. I strive to produce images that are simple, actively engage the viewer, and use light creatively to convey feeling and meaning. I also place special emphasis on the quality of the final product and also the quality of the services associated with my products. Whether the purpose of the image is to convey an idea or to show the subject's personality, my style is based on quality, simplicity, engagement and creative light.

I think a mission statement can be another thing that sets you apart. Why not use another opportunity to tell would-be clients why they should hire you? List things that make your business unique, incorporate them in a brief and memorable sentence.

Thanks guys that was sort of the point. It certainly isn't for a loan as I would be laughed out of the bank at the moment lol. It was more to let clients know and to keep reminding yourself when you get down why you do what you do etc...
Paco, Thanks so much for yours!
