To sell, or not to sell - 01-27-2010, 12:22 PM

This is the first product I have ever had issue with. My business partner and I can't agree. I think tacky and cheap (but I can see them selling, people buy tacky and cheap) she thinks beautiful and cool.
What I am talking about. LumaVue. If you were at Texas School last year or Imaging or at Sandy Puc's Family Tour last night, you will have seen them. They are LED-light panels that hold photos and the light shines through creating a bright photo. Kinda looks like your monitor, but with a tacky glow around the edges.

So what is your opinion of this product.
If you go the their website you get a hint of what they look like but you really have to see them in person. We see something bright in your future. | Luma Vue

Hmmm...so it takes a picture and makes it look like it's a computer monitor, bright and clear, making it stand out? I don't think it looks cheap but again, I haven't seen it in person. It could be used for a night light. ;)

They Look great when printed on the correct back-lit film that is what those boxes/frames were originally intended for. I spent alot of money on large format films, but have not put the money together yet for the frames/boxes.

Hope that helps some Janice, Robert

I saw Luma Vue displays last night at Sandy Puc's seminar and also at the Bridal show.

I am with your partner. Some photos will look good on those displays. I don't think they look cheap.... might be a little bit tacky.

I am wondering how much those might cost.

Better get on board.. Luma Vue is the next thing. We had a bride point it out to US, and have had multiple inquiries about it since then. They had a booth at IUSA too.

I saw them at Texas School.. I think you and I even discussed them.. I can see it fitting in a house with a modern design, but would not fit in a traditional setting.

They also would sell hotcakes in business settings, I would think.. especially retail.

Even if it means booking a wedding vs not booking a wedding?

Well, I really don't care if I feel they are tacky as long as our clients don't. We have two on order and will only order the "prints" from Luma Vue as I know they will use and produce the correct film correctly. We will be displaying two at a trade Expo in Dallas in March, I guess I will find out then. But at at Expo I think they will draw attention. The nice thing is that they have now removed the LumaVue logo from the glass (which is what Brad and I discussed at Texas School). It is just everytime I look at one I think McDonalds and look for the pricing!
Maybe this is where you need to know the client that will be coming in. If they are seriously high end people, I KNOW these will never fly.

what's cool and what sells are sometimes different things.

with the luma vue, you also have this horrendous power source. yeah, you can cover it up in one fashion or another, but it is more cost to the product.

fads come and go. i predict lumavue is a fad (not saying it won't sell...). at the end of the day, good old fashioned prints sell the best (for us) and have the best margins.

we're not adding it to our product line. mainly b/c we don't want to spend the cash for a sample (no show, no sell). maybe we'll sink?

Granted the quality of these is a bit better, but the concept is the same and just gives me flashbacks to yuckier days.

Ya Chris, even if it meant that LOL People hire me for my style, and that product does not fit my style.

I think they're freakin' awesome. She's the second photographer who I've seen with them. They're quite expensive though.

Its good they took the logos off... and the McD's comment is what I was talking about in retail... and its that reason alone I wouldn't carry them.

What about the acrylics from Miller's? No power source.. I like the way they look for certain things.. they don't feel as tacky as the Luma Vue things..

Here's another view of some:

And this is the guy (on the right) who owns them... he's a Ft. Worth photographer named David S. Irvin (nice guy).

And here's another (That's Jeanie Price in the middle ground... she's a 2010 Dallas PPA board member):
