I've searched and searched for an answer before coming to this thread. I was just contacted by a Design Agency through Flickr wanting to purchase one of my images to use for a fee. The image will be placed in a dining area of a restaurant or hotel. Haven't confirmed that quite yet.

I've never SOLD an image before and I'm not sure what to quote them. I have asked them specifics of usage and waiting for their answers. Is there anything particular I need to ask? If it's a one time usage to make a LARGE print, how much should I charge?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions!

Claudine, another suggestion would be to request the customer to pay Getty Stock rates for the image - that would make it acceptable to them as you're using ongoing stock rates for what seems like a stock transaction. You were not commissioned to do the work, hence a stock fee seems appropriate.

You can go to gettyimages.com and search for an image similar to yours, then select a type of license, Royalty Free or Rights Managed, and come up with a price.

On the title you mentioned Flickr Getty collection - if you're already signed up with Getty, the sale of the image should go thru them.

Thank you all! I kinda highjacked the original post, as I was trying to search the forum for an answer vs. creating a new topic. I was contacted personally by the Design Agency and do not belong to Flickr Getty Collection.

I looked at a rights-managed photo on Getty Images similar to mine, and it does seem a bit pricey. I also learned a lot from ASMP.org. Thank you!!!!

My sister has been with that program for a couple of years now and she does pretty well. Considering her costs (nil except for time) and how she has some images that sell over and over...it's a good deal for her. Add to that the fact that US dollars go a whole lot farther where she lives and it's a win-win.

Thomas, that's not very nice.

Her costs: Canon xsi, $700 tops. 50mm1.4-free (gift from friend who upgraded). Natural light: free. Origami paper: $1 maybe. Card: came with camera. Model: free (herself). Time: worth peanuts living in a more embarrasingly saturated market than the US. Less than peanuts bec at the time she was a hobbyist. Computer: it's Asia, source of cheap parts so $500 is generous especially if you don't consider the thing was frankensteined over many years. Insurance? That's where you have me, I have no idea but I doubt it's more that $400 a year.

One image: netted her $3,400. She has quite a few with Getty and Getty's helped her make money to cover. During lean times.

A different image got her $450 once. She was going to charge $50 but I told her to ask them what the AD's budget was. Same costs as above except for maybe $15 for the meal they were eating when she snapped the photo of her family in the restaurant. This one was just floating in her Flickr stream, the AD found it via her Getty Flickr set.

So considering her costs and that many of her images provide her a little something each month, it's a decent deal.
