Branding Question - 01-29-2010, 02:46 PM

I have developed a logo in which the wording is done in a dark color. However I am working on a marketing piece in which the background of the piece is also a dark color. I have updated my logo on the marketing piece to be a light color.

Do you think I am diluting my brand? Should I change my marketing piece to have a background color that will fit with existing color of my logo?

I have attached two images of my logo, the one with the white background is my official logo. The one with the dark background is the logo on the marketing piece.

No. But brand dilution (the use of a logo in conjuntion with ever-expanding markets or activities) and brand standards (appropriate characteristics and presentation or a brand) are separate issues.

Many orgaizations have limited, but defined logo variations, based on the surrounding document/presentation/package. Look at what other people do as a guide. For example here are the American Red Cross Branding Standards. Google "Brand Standard" for some more ideas.

In your case, these look to be the two primary variants based upon the nature of the surrounding field in the medias and look fine to me.

No, This is done all the time. Another challenge is how this logo would appear on a textured, multi-colored or photo background. A holding shape may then be considered. Of course you would have the option of going with either version. If that is the case I'd make the spacing under "photography" equal to the other 3 sides. Hope this helps.

Guys thanks for the feedback! I'm a little obsessed to making sure I get branding right from the start.
