Is there some useful purpose in debating the gross pay offered on this gig and the net pay it would generate? People work hourly paid jobs that when they accepted had a pay rate, then came the W4, insurance, and deductions for things like uniforms. Whether it was a $40/hr hour or $14/hr the employee is not going to bring home the gross per/hr pay. There are costs of doing business, even if you are an employee of someone elses business. Transportation, commute time, and lunch are all considerations to make before accepting any job offer.

There are low paying job offers all over the place. I live in a town of fewer than 5,000 population with no fewer than 9 eating establishments of those 7 are fast food. The pay for these jobs [management aside] is low, minimum wage for the most and less for wait staff. None of them are hurting for employees. In the mule trade they say, "there's an ass for every saddle". High school and college kids make up the workforce in these businesses because adults with responsibilities can't make a living working in them. Most generally those on the outside don't disparage these places because they pay low nor do they rdicule the kids who work there. We just decline the fries or hot apple pie to go with that, and drive home with the burgers.

I was curious too if anyone pikced up this gig. What's the going day-rate for candid picture coverage with no processing? If it was no further than 60 miles and required no more than walking around popping candids I might do it for $100. If it netted me $80 that would be more than I'd pick up watching TV.

I suppose since the event is long since past all this banter is really moot.

Steven

I've always been a party guy. Been partying since before AT&T stopped making rotary phones. When I got into photography I had the wonderful opportunity to merge work and pleasure and began by charging $100 to shoot for 4 hours. In 2009 I booked 32 of these $100 events on Friday and Saturday nights. Over the last 3 years, these types of events have led to additional shoots and extended networking with
Mark Cuban
Terrell Owens
Jamie Foxx
Terrence Newman
Michael Blackson (african king of comedy)
Billy Sims (1978 heisman winner)
Josh Howard
Chris Brown
Raven Simone
Kenyon Martin
Donovan McNabb
AT&T
Fort Worth Black Chamber of Commerce
state representative Marc Veasey
former secretary of state James Baker
...and then there's the spinoff from the normal folks partying at these events who happen to be looking for a photographer for the graduations/weddings/birthday parties that they're having. Don't forget the added bonus of not having to pay for a club admission even when I'm out on the town and not shooting since I've done so much work for a lot of the party promoters around town.

I've had photos in the Philadelphia Daily News, B.E.T., bossip.com, TMZ, and next month's issue of Working Mother Magazine. When I look back I'd consider $100 for this type of event a wonderful opportunity...for me. For someone else who's concerned about price vs time graphs, well, maybe not. I like the road its taken me down though.
