What sells? - 03-17-2010, 11:38 AM

I am doing an art show in two weeks in Kingwood (The Kingwood Art Society) - entering some of my paintings and some of my photographs. I have the opportunity to sell at the show and I was wondering what kind of prints would sell....flowers/landscapes/birds etc. Do people like to buy greeting cards with your prints on or just prints that they can frame?
If anyone has any input I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Personally, I would think they would like something they could frame. Are you going to be at the show yourself? I would think you could ask people as they are looking at your stuff what they are looking for.

I saw a guy from Austin at a show. He sold lots and lots of prints - mostly HDR - of sunsets, landscapes, flowers, windmills, old Texas towns, and cars. Each print was in plastic in a bin. He had lots framed and hanging. There was something for everyone.

Will there be a specific type of person likely to attend and shop at the art show? Do you know in general what other exhibitors will be showing? That might help you narrow down what you present. Work that stands out in some way, but is approachable, would be my best bet.

Thanks Holly. Appreciate your input. So I guess a little bit of everything would work.

I wouldnt limit yourself to one thing. And you might have shots that would sell well, so why not bring them?

Depends on the show... some of them are looking for wall art only, others anything goes.

Public taste runs the gambit... but big sellers in your area are probably Coastal, Texas, and Southwest. My experience is that flowers rarely sell (cuz everyone shoots those) and you probably won't sell much northern/snow scenes in Houston area (though there are exceptions, of course).
