Have Started Funeral Photography - 04-03-2010, 11:49 PM

Good Morning Team!

Take a look at my site: It is still a piece of work in progress:

Home - A WebsiteBuilder Website

Let me know what you think.

The business has started slow but I'm looking for it to pick up.
Plans are to place ads to inform the public the pros of this type
of program.

Looking forward to your input.
Thanks in advance -

Bruce

Don't quit your day job. I have built contacts with at least a dozen funeral homes in my area and I get only about one call every two or three years. I used to get jobs two or three times a year. Nowadays everyone has a point and shoot and those images seem to be good enough.

Interesting concept and I'd like to know how the business does.
I'm always looking for avenues to increase cash flow through photography.

Site looks good.

It was so depressing shooting funeral that I gave up doing that. If you target the Asian community, I know they do that quite a bit.

This is a worthwhile service to offer. I find the sight a little "wordy" and recommend that you simplify it a bit. I doubt that grieving family members are looking for a hard sell or "memories that last forever" in light of the fact that the people who might value the memories most will not live forever. More than likely they are looking for memories that they can cherish in this time of separation from the deceased.

Wow, do people really want photos of their loved ones funerals?!
I'd want to remember all the good times from when they were alive, not when they were being layed to rest.

I mean, i could see if it was a big rememberance type gtg celebrating the persons life after the funeral, but the actual funeral? No offense to the OP, but man that seems morbid to me.

Taking photos of dead babies is pretty morbid, but there is a certain segment of parents who will cherish them forever.
It's like a lot of things in life. What is OK for some is not OK for others. Living in the USA is greatness because we have choices and they aren't generally made for us.

Ya, and i can understand that.

But general pics of the coffin, grave and funeral home?
Well, like you said, to each his own!
I would just be shocked if there was much of a market for that, that's all.

I took pictures at my father's funeral and my father-in-law's funeral. No shots at the funeral of the mother-in-law except at the cemetery. At the time of her passing the body had changed so much that no one wanted to remember her that way.

There is no morbidity to any of the photos because I valued both men very much in my life.

I totally understand the dead baby thing Tom because I do NILMDTS photos, but for alot of those families it is more about having the photos for healing, not so much for what we would think of. Not that families aren't hanging them on the wall. On the other hand, with families being so spread out these days, sometimes the only time they ever get together are at funerals. It's wierd, but I learned from my husbands family, that sometimes even though they do things different than my family, if you live it, it's not as wierd as you think!!!

Bruce, I like the website and hope it goes well for you. I have learned in my "long long life"!! that funerals are a normal part of the life process. I didn't have the opportunity to see some of the deceased one's close to me and/or attend their funeral. It makes it much more difficult to process their death. Your "recording" it will help those that can't attend a loved ones funeral heal. Good for you...

This is nothing new, well at least since the early 1800's. With the invention of daguereoteotype, portraiture post mortem-photography bloomed. My grandparents had photos of their grand parents dressed and posed with family. Since many could not afford to have a commission of a oil painting this was a way to get photos quick and it was less expensive. Many times they would dress the dead loved one and pose with them. These photographs served less as a reminder of mortality than as a keepsake to remember the deceased. This was especially common with infants and young children the photograph might be the only image of the child the family ever had.
