Product vs. Digital Images - 04-21-2010, 10:42 AM

I am just starting to get Very Serious on my Business. Getting ready to set up a Home Studio.

My question is, what is the easiest way to migrate into selling product, when in the past all I have really done is just sell the Digital images on a CD.

How do you tell your clients you dont sell your Digital Images, and how do you keep them from not doing business with you once youtell them you no longer sell the digital images.

I would like to hear your personal experiences on this.

Thanks Everyone!!

One business model revolves around getting paid adequately for all processes prior to the final image delivery, so that the delivery medium is relatively unimportant. As an hypothetical example lets say you get a $350.00 session fee and this might include two digitally enhanced images. Each additional image has a processing fee of $50.00.

So in this case we will say that the client picks a total of six images and you have $550.00. Let's assume they want an 8X10 of each image for which you charge $15.00, so another $90.00. Let's also assume that you charge $50.00 to put the same images on a CD. So the $40.00 difference covers your lab costs for printing the 8X10s.

So it really comes down to asking your client, "Paper or Plastic?" You made your money on your time and talents. Now if they want something larger than an 8X10 the print prices would be higher, but the principle is still the same.

Great info Don!

Kevin, another option would be a "print credit" added into the pricing. This way the client feels they are getting something besides the session. I am not a big fan of "packages" so I would rather let the client make the choice of "what and how", plus I have it seamlessly integrated into my cart so there is no extra work involved. Generally I use this method for family sessions, but occasionally we will proof in studio like we do with seniors, brides, etc. especially if they are high end clients.

If you plan to proof in your home studio, make sure if you can show samples of everything you sell. Make your samples big, frame them, etc so the client can really "feel" what they want.

SAMPLES is what i am currently working on right now. That way when I do get ready to open the Home Studio, I will already have samples of what I will offer!
