i think you're real close.
but i think it's more that (the majority, not all) people want something that not everyone can get. they want a status symbol. we generally see this with brands/services/etc that are so outrageously priced that only the rich can afford.
what if you could create that same kind of want, but take it down a notch or two on the income level. like the author mentioned, look at apple. thier products aren't out of reach for the majority of people. they are slightly more expensive than an equivalent device, but they can do that now. they're apple. they're a status symbol.
how many people have heard of an iphone, and how many have heard of a droid phone? which do you think the majority of people would pick if money wasn't an object? how about a ford vs a bmw? i could go on and on.
one last example though, ed hardy. it's just another piece of clothing right?
