Question Graphic Design Question - Fonts. - 06-15-2010, 06:28 AM

I didn't know where to place this, so its going here.

For you graphic designers, which kind of font is 'universal', and the best to use when creating marketing materials? In other words, which fonts are recognized by most commercial printers?

I ask because I created my logo on my PC, and just selected a random font that looked 'modern' to me. It's a True Type Font called 'Blair Regular'. After transferring my PS files etc to the Mac this weekend, and opening my logo file in CS4 last night, I realized that the text in my logo wasn't correct - because 'Blair Regular' isn't a font that is in the Apple world. I searched online for the font, but could not find a matching one, and I also tried to copy it from the PC to the Mac but it wouldn't let me.

I do have it saved as an .eps file, which is vector based and should have embedded the fonts correct? (I haven't checked that one, and only thought about it as I was typing this out.)

You might can find it here:

Free Mac Fonts - Download Macintosh Fonts

Did you have a professional design your logo? If so, you can always ask them to send you the font. Any TrueType Font should work I would think.

I looked there last night... They have a 'blair' family of fonts, but none are the one I used.

Take a look at this:

Convert any font with TransType universal font converter

Your first mistake is designing a logo in photoshop.

Logos need to be designed in vector format, not bitmap.
This way you can convert them to paths (gets rid of font issues) and they are infinitely scaleable. Can be imported into photoshop if need be at any time at any size.

Yes, I understand my 'mistake'. However, because I dont have the budget to afford the Illustrator program, and/or to hire a qualified graphic designer, I'm forced to do it on my own, and make it work. Which its done so far...

You can rasterize your type in PS, turning it into a graphic. Font problem solved, but you still have all the other issues associated with logo design in PS.

Here's a pretty nice, free, cross-platform alternative.
Inkscape. Draw Freely.

I bet there are peeps here that would be willing to lend a hand.

I for one would be game to help you out.

Thanks!

Is 'rasterizing' what it does when you save it in a .eps format?

Just right-click on that layer and choose "rasterize type". It's now pixels, not a font.
But you'd have to do this on the pc.

You can email it to me, and I can do it for you if you wish when I get to my processing machine.

Oh fun... I've already deleted the file from the PC and uninstalled PS. I'll take a look at it this evening when I get home.

I have a friend that works for a print shop and a lot of times clients of his just include the font with the files of what they want printed. That way if he doesn't have it, they can just use the one provided by the client. Not sure if everyone works that way, but it seems like they should. That way the client is free to be as creative as they want in anything they design or create.
