Cotton Mill Mckinney - Possible loft for a studio? - 07-15-2010, 11:56 AM

For those who’ve visited the Cotton Mill in Mckinney, have you seen any of their loft office spaces for lease?

I didn’t realize just how large the Cotton Mill in McKinney was until I saw their website.

I’ve been thinking about venturing into opening up a studio and the sample photos looks like the studio concept I’m interested in. (rustic, bricks, loft style, high ceiling and it seems there’s a lot of natural light)

Are there any photographers renting a loft out there for studio use?

If you’ve seen the lofts, would it be good for a studio?

I wouldn't put a studio there for the simple reason that a LOT of photographers rent the main space for photography... I would hate to have a client in my shop looking out over 2 or 3 other photographers all shooting there.

The backgrounds are great.. and its a beautiful space (though I've never shot there myself).. I just wouldn't want my actual studio there.

I see your point but, by the time when the client shows up, I should already have a contract and a payment before the shoot. :)

Just go by and check it out. They are more than happy to show you the space. I think that there is at least one photographer.

If you have the kind of money to afford THAT kind of lease space... I'm suddenly single, and looking for marriage.

There is at least one photographer there by the office. They look like a family photographer with lots of props. That area is air conditioned.

I've never been to the Cotton Mill, but being at a popular photo location hasn't seemed to hurt the Sallees on the canal in Las Colinas. I wouldn't personally like it, but it seems to have worked for them.

While the Sallees shoot some in the canals, their building is more for sales and customer impression than it is a studio.... and they are primarily destination wedding photographers.

Show's how up to date I am. Although I knew their "studio" was mostly for sales, etc., I thought they still shot in the canals all the time.

A lot of their website shows stuff obviously shot in the canals area... but they claim they "hardly ever" shoot down there if you ask them now.

'Course, what do I know? I personally haven't shot there but one time and that was over 3 years ago.

It's funny how much that building has changed. My great-grandparents actually worked in the cotton mill and my Dad grew up right across the street in a mill block house. It was empty and then turned into a furniture wholesaler. I'm glad that it's being used now. As a matter of fact, the company that created the iPhone App "Words with Friends" has moved or will be moving into there.

Sorry, I realize that means nothing to y'all but I thought I would share.
