Remove my logo? - 07-24-2010, 11:54 PM

I had a customer ask me to remove my logo from the final print. I'm certain this family isn't aware of the customary business practice of placing a small logo on your finished product.

Please help me craft a response, considering that this family is making a sizable purchase. Thanks!

What do you have for a logo? Maybe compromise with a watermark?

My logo is very simple "Grace"......that's it. My customer said "Grace" appeared to be his wife's name. The print is an 8x10 of his wife. I could make the "Grace Photography" and it would definitely NOT appear to be his wife's name.

There was a recent court case posted on the internet addressing such an issue and the judge required the photographer to remove it. In the past studios sometimes included their logo but there may be a trend to change that since individuals have little qualms about scanning smaller works.

Have you considered watermarking the back of the photo as a compromise? There you can include contact information also.

I do not watermark the prints the clients purchase from me. I do print my copyright info on the back. I trust my clients not to scan or reproduce my images and I tell them that with every purchase.

+1

I wouldn't hang a print with an advertising message in my living room either.

Is it a watermark or a signature? Our prints have our studio name in silver or gold. The back of the prints have the copyright info printed on them - but that serves a different purpose. Large prints are signed by hand. If they see print samples ahead of time, it will prevent this kinda thing from happening again.

Thanks to you all for your input. I really appreciate your participation in my dilemma.

I explained to my customer that the very small logo was customary to serve notice of copyright, allowing no question regarding ownership of the copyright. My customer readily agreed to leave the logo and I gave a little and made the logo smaller. It was a good day!!!
