Pricing question - 08-10-2010, 01:43 PM

I'm working toward getting to the point I feel my quality is worth actually making money from. So I've started thinking about pricing. I might have an opportunity here in the near future to do some photos for some companies. I noticed that a lot of people charge like a $200-250 session fee for individuals and then of course packages for how many photos they want for print. But what about if a company wants to hire you to take photos? What is a fair price and do you do it per hour or just a flat session fee. Also they will want the rights to use the photos. So is there an additional fee for that or is it all included? Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've done $500 for a small company that needs shots for the website. Flat rate for all images, which included head shots of employees and a few of the location. I think I shot for 1.5-2 hours.

So how many images all together did you process and give them?

There is a price calculator on top on this section that you can get some idea from.

When I do corporate work, I have a rate for the day and an hour. I almost always use the Day and Half Day rate.

Yes, you need to consider Copyright with them, because the Corporate guys usually use it on their own Intranet and pass it around like a soccer ball to all of their staff that is on the project or event you are shooting for. Who knows where it goes from there.

Good luck figuring a price out. Because there isn't a set price for anything. You just need to price according to what you and your client decide will be the use of your photos.

I looked at the pricing sticky but the calculator on there was for stock images and just quoted the prices to charge per image. Didn't know if that would be the same as doing a shoot for a company.

I showed about 80 basically edited proofs. They chose 25 to have fully edited and put on a disc.

This was for a local construction company. I would also do this price for other small companies, doctors, etc. If it were a sole proprietorship, only one person and essentially one photo needed, I would charge less. If it were a large company with wider distribution, I would charge more. $500 was for about a half day's work.
