I'm trying to figure out the best way to sell my pictures to businesses, marketing & advertising companies, and whoever else might be interested. Any suggestions?

The first thing you need to do is define a subject, area or discipline. For example, you could say "I want to be an architectural photographer". Next, do a google search for architectural photographers in your area, get the first ten, then get an impartial person who will tell you the truth even if it leaves you sobbing in the corner and ask them, "am I that good?".

If no, then continue working on your area until you are that good.

If yes, then take a few marketing classes and read a few marketing books. There are some great marketing books available on Amazon targeted directly at photographers.

Getting people to buy your photos is not easy, even if you are "that good", it requires long hours and hard work.

YOU NEED TO FIND A NICHE AND FILL IT!
Every Tom, Dick and Harry now has a DSLR and can at times get shots that are saleable, so you need to find a market and then fill it.

Some people try stock photography. Could be one thing to look in to.

If I were to try to get into stock photography, what's the best way to do that?

Get lots and lots of pictures of everyday stuff and post them on places like Getty and ShutterStock.

And its not about how beautiful your pictures are, its how general purpose they can become. So pictures of your kids or pets no matter how cute are more than likely NOT to be accepted. While people drinking coffee or beer and fiddling sometime, has a better chance YMMV.

For me, I find you just get out there and start shooting for different things.

Like I do alot of venues, and I just got out there and shoot. And within that venue, I meet potentials and just keep pushing at the venues. You eventually start getting some buzz about you taking photos and in you go.

But again, it's all about what you want to shoot.

For the corporate guys, hit them up about events and different times when they need a photographer to cover an area. That's how my current studio, I work for did it, and still does it.

Good luck to ya.
