Wakeup Call: Offsite Backup - 09-03-2010, 10:46 PM

Had the house broken into today. Alarm was going off so all they made off with was the wife's powerbook. All my nikon equipment, leica equipment, computer equipment, etc was untouched. And my Sony LCD tv was sitting in the backyard. Next to the kicked in back door.

Anyhoo, even though i back up to separate drives, they could have all easily been stolen. Any online offsite backups you would recommend? The only one I've heard of recently is Carbonite.

One alternative is to bring your backup drive to a deposit safebox at you local bank branch.

Sorry to hear about Dennis, that all really sucks.

My process:
I have everything triple backed up on-site. Two external 2.5" HDs that are mirrored and 1 3.5" External that contains the info of two groups of 2.5" externals. Each 3.5" external is mirrored monthly and kept in a safety deposit box at the bank (free with my business acct!) Then quarterly it is mirrored and kept in SA at my parents house. Plus every finished JPEG is uploaded to smugmug.

Probably not the most effeicent way to do things, but I feel safe.

Cool, ya i though about going and getting one or two more externals but i know I'll get lazy with updating them and dragging them around, especially when i don't drive my car every day (bicycle or motorcyle instead). The online backup would be the easiest in theory, although i dont have any experience with this. My back to mac account only gives me 10gb... i need way more than that.

My Carbonite acount has 38GB so far...... I copy what I want stored onto a folder on my desktop and Carbonite does the rest..... there's a few others out there... Mozy.... iDrive... but Carbonite works for me so I've never looked into the others

Bigger concern to me is what was on the laptop that could be used for ID theft? Thieves have found that taking your personal data is something quick and easy that is worth so much more than the cost of a laptop.... check out my website and follow the Identity Theft Shield link... remember, once they have the information, they have YOU........

Smugmug gives you unlimited online storage. For a fee, they will burn a disc and mail you whatever you need. Or you can download it.

The cheapest is $40/year and the pro level is $150 a year, but you probably just need the cheapest. My referral code is: tPjOHxdnUbCCI You would get $5 off, and I would get $10 off my next annual renewal.

My stats right now:
Signed up: Sep 27, 2005 7:56pm BST | Account renewal: 2010-09-27 | Account type: Pro Upgrade • Cancel

Uploads > Total: 38346 upload log | Storage used: 172.75 GB

Photo views > This month: 5905 statistics

I've been a big fan. No RAWs uploaded, but as a pro, you can upload 25MB jpegs. Not too shabby.

You can hide whatever you want. So I have 38K photos uploaded, but you can't see a single ****ty picture I took in 2005, you can only see the ****ty pictures I have taken recently.

I think Amazon has a file storage service, and Smugmug offers a file storage service too, called Smugvault. SmugVault: Safe Backup

I think they use Amazon's servers for that. Sounds pretty cheap and you can store pretty much any file.

I've seen/heard commercials for Mozy too. If I had to choose one I'd choose Smugvault probably, since I already have a ton of photos on my Pro account and have used them for some time now.

Oh, i have a smugmug account, but i figured their backup was only on whatever pics were posted in my galleries (which are all personal stuff). Too bad you can't upload the raws.

•Storage costs 22 cents per gigabyte per month. If you upload the contents of a 2 GB memory card, you'll be out 44 cents/month for storage.
•There is a $1/month recurring charge.
•Data transfer in is 30 cents per gigabyte. Data transfer out is 51 cents per gigabyte.

So for 600gb it would cost me $132/month plus the data transfer fees?

Yeah, which is why I keep my RAWs in a couple of 2TB drives at people's houses, not online.

And Carbonite is $54.95 a year for unlimited storage, it doesn't care what format the files are stored... best feature for me... it automatically backs up whatever is on the drive without any interaction from me after it's been setup

Yikes! That sounds steep!
I like the sound of Carbonite...
