Pop Pop POP MUSIC - SlideShow Help!!! - 12-10-2005, 06:00 AM

I need some help forum members.....

I have a client who wants her wedding images put to music in a slideshow, while I have no problem making one for her free of charge, I do have a problem with what music to put to the images. You see she wants pop music, something along the lines of Ryan Cabrera's song True, and since I have used that before she wants something different. Here lies the problem, I personally do not listen to pop music so my knowledge of it is very slim to none. Can you guys and girls help me out and direct me to some pop music which would work for this slideshow?

Thank you in advance as always!

Not being a POP fan myself but having these two songs in mind for a slide show for a while, try them you may be pleased and your client I am sure will find some meaning in them.

Damien Rice - "Blowers Daughter"
Damien Rice - "Cannonball" (Not to be confused with the Breeder's "cannonball")

Give these two a listen and see if they wont fit, if you need them let me know.
Other than that try KISS, they have some great tunes and if this is wedding shots maybe AC/DC "Highway To Hell"...LOL j/k

"Pop Music" means different things to many people... I'd make her choose the song(s). That way if she doesn't like it, you have C'dYA.

No Camera And No Lenses Right Now...
Maybe a new Canon 1D series in the future?

How bout some Nazareth "Love Hurts"? For a real answer how bout browsing through the iTunes store? They have everything from classical to GWAR, but for some reason no AC/DC. I don't get it....

I tried that but it is like being in 5th grade again and not knowing how to spell a word and the teacher tells you to go get a Dictionary and find the word. I have not a clue on where to even start not knowing any pop music for the most part.

Technically, unless you have royalty-free music, she should provide the music to you on CD, if you want follow the whole copyright guidelines....but aside from that, POP is a huge spectrum of different sounds...she should really be more specific to you. I would be willing to bet that if she knows what song you should not use, then she has an idea of what she wants....at least a certain artist or sound. While she might want you to pick the song, at least ask her some of the artists that she listens to...then you will have narrowed down the field and can make a better decision...

OK, gonna chime in hear again with a question relating to this topic, but outside of Mike's question. The way I translated the copyright laws for use of music, you can only use copyrighted music if it is provided on an original CD by the couple that is receiving the product. Otherwise, you must use royalty-free music. Is this correct? Does anyone have more precise information, because if there is another way, I'd love to know about it...

To answer your question, you are probably correct in stating the party should supply the CD...although even with that, a Record Company lawyer could still say YOU violated the law. It is a VERY grey area for photography slideshows, with very little precedence. I would not post a slideshow (with music) for public viewing on the web without consent from the record company (which you wont get without $$). As far as private use....well thats up to you and the client.

"I used to own the CD but after I made my mp3 the strangest thing happened, the CD just turned to dust. I sure am happy I have one of the songs from that CD right here on my wedding video."

The client does supply the CD to me and the slideshow is free of charge since I do not want to get wrapped up in this ongoing debate about music and Record Company Lawyers. I do own quite a bit of royalty-free music which I use in some slideshows also. I am just lost on the subject when it comes to this type of music.

...and having researched this before, you actually need several clearances. The song writers (through something like ASCAP - depending on which clearing house they use), the performers, and the record company. Seems everyone has different rights in the use of recorded music - it's not just "one stop shopping"!

Mike, I'm sure its been posted somewhere before, and maybe by you even, but what sources(s) would you recommend for hunting for royalty-free music? (Good ones that is). I've started doing slideshows, and I may want to talk with you a bit about your experiences sometime when you get a chance...

I'm sure there are a lot more, but I bought from http://www.freshmusic.com

Every show I have done so far has used the music I purchased from their site...guess I'll keep using it rather that jack with copyrighted stuff...

Mike, as for the POP music, I don't know a lot about it, but I would guess that some of the groups would be Destiny's Child and Usher (at least I've heard their names)...keep in mind that POP and R&B are usually grouped together from what I've seen...you definately wouldn't say that Janet Jackson (80s/90s POP) would fall into what POP is today...Hopefully she'll give you at least some groups/artists that she likes...
