I would just go talk to someone at USPS or FedEx/Kinkos (F/K people are usually really helpful).

I would build a box to fit out of heavy cardboard stock and good strapping tape. A lot of postal centers sell the board in big sheets. Layer extra cardboard above and below your stack of mats that are slightly larger. Also wrap more board around your stack tight so they don't slide against each other. Put a large plastic wrap over this before you put it in your box in case it gets dumped in the rain. Then insure the crap out of it! I have the best luck with US Postal as far as least packages damaged and price. UPS seems to throw things out of a moving truck at destinations now. Good luck.
