Making and selling calendars - 11-13-2010, 06:55 AM

Anyone have any experience doing this? I am tossing around the idea of doing a calendar and I see that there are loads of sites that publish and sell for you. Wondering if there are other ways or any info you guys have about this area would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

I've never done calendars for sale, but rather just a few for gifts, but I always use Millers. They offer some pretty cool options for calendars, even dry erase calendars.

Thanks for the comments, I was thinking on a bigger scale here. Not self publishing and not really using somethig like Lulu where anyone with a camera can upload pictures and have a Lulu sell them for you. I was thinking more along the lines of a place that does calendars for brick amd mortar stores, like you see in the mall. They have to get those pictures from photographers somehow and thats the info I was really looking for. I figured someone on here must have done some of this type of work.

+1 on the calendars as gifts. I'm using FedEx Office this year on a test basis. The default paper stock seems light but they do offer a heavier option. They offer pricing discounts for larger order quantities. You have to create an account, but it is free. They will try to load you up on post cards, business cards, and refrigerator magnets during checkout.

They got 5 calendars of my original order fouled up but had corrected copies to my door the next business day.

Just my experience but thought I would share.

I was typing when you posted your last comment. Try contacting some of the Calendaring companies like www.browntrout.com. They produce many if the special Dog Breeds calendars. I know for a fact that they accept customer photos in creating some of those calendars.

I have a question. A grand one. Where, pray tell, do you start pricing for calendars? A customer wants me to make calendars of her horses for her to give away for Christmas presents this year. Do I charge her a flat rate of a million dollars or do I do a farm call fee, plus hours of work, plus $35.00 per calendar she wants to order? Because then we're talking several hundred dollars for a couple of Christmas presents and that just doesn't seem like a good deal to me. But idk, I don't know what people will drop money on as far as photography goes.
