Client entering photo in a contest? - 01-26-2011, 10:15 AM

I had a client email me asking if the could get a copy of an image to enter it into a contest.

It's a great photo - it's his son, but I'm not entirely comfortable with this idea. Usually entering the photo means releasing it for use by that contest group - or some other.

Would you do it?

I would definitely ask what the contest is and who's running it... and yes, usually when you submit an image the group will reserve the right to do with it what they like.

plus if its a photo contest... how could HE enter it if he didnt shoot it.

I have had a couple clients ask this too. My answer is "let me read the fine print". They get me the contest info and I show them the copyright (most of these contest DO say they get rights to the photo). Both the clients, when showed the fine print said "I don't wanna do that!" So I didn't have to say no to them:)

I let them as long as they have purchased the digital file with usage rights.
