WHCC Question....and FTP's? - 01-20-2006, 04:17 PM

I have been trying to upload the "Test Prints" to WHCC, five files totaling 9.17mg. Finally figured out my ISP e-mail only supports 1mg attachments and each of my files is over that. Punched "send" and it fizzled. So....went to wifie's office and used her "unlimited attachments" e-mail, WHCC kicked it back. Called them, got the "We didn't get anything from you" response. Well, Duh! Being stuborn, I mailed the CD to them 'cause I wanna know if my edits are close enough. BUT......here's the questions, (1) why do I have to go buy an FTP program to upload and (2) what is a good FTP program to use?

I'm used to Smugmug and EZPrints......their uploader is SLICK!! and FREE!! At least it's included in the service.

I'd really like to try on-line labs other than just EZPrints but I need help with this FTP thing....Please?

TIA,
~dp

There are hundreds of FTP programs out there... many of which are free. If you had checked WHCC's "FAQ", they recommend using "Smart FTP". But any FTP program will do.

Smart FTP can be found here: http://www.smartftp.com, and it's free for personal use.

If you want to see other choices, just google "Free FTP" and pick one.

You can also use their LabPrints software to upload (not sure if you have to have the account established first)...makes for easier ordering.

Another "note", you have ftp built into the Windows OS (if your using)...although command line can be daunting...you can also use internet explorer to FTP as well. Since it's easier to explain for IE...open it up and in the address line put in : ftp://ftp.whcc.com <--enter or Go...should get a prompt for username and password.

<edit>
After you log-in you can drag and drop your files onto explorer from another file browser window.

Hwy, thanks for your response and the links. I did read WHCC's "FAQ" and "tried" the FTP thing but I first have to have an account with them (I think) so no luck going that route. At least not yet. The problem is my VERY limited knowledge in how to deal with WHCC, FTP's etc. I'm still in the "little bitty baby steps" faze here. Then again, maybe us very old Harley riders should just leave all this computer magic to you younger "Busa" riders.

AAAAaaaaahhhh! Thanks AW, the fog is beginning to lift. Still not perfectly clear but I think I can get there from here.

Am I correct in thinking WHCC limits the first contact to E-mail or mailing a CD? Then after they check the files for correct format they set up the account? And THEN I can worry about FTP? Looks like I got the horse behind the cart.

I followed the link to the log-in prompt so at least we know I can get that far.

Again, thanks for your time and instructions.

I highly recommend Filezilla from the mozilla folks! It goes lickety split with multiple connections at a time! Try it, you might like it!

Thanks, Scott. Looks like I'll have to get an account set up before I can start my search for "the bestest, fastest, CHEAPEST" FTP. I want to upload NOW, not next weekend

Years ago, I prayed for patience. What I've learned from that is: Never pray for patience if you don't want the lessons. Dumb me, I thought I was going to wake up the next morning and just be full of it. ................I know, I'm full of it alright, but I still think instant gratification is better.

I had tried to use WHCC a little over a year ago and also had the same problem.

As for an FTP, as others have said, try Filezilla - I use it all the time.

Well I've never tried WHCC, but they do ask for the test photos before establishing an account... so I'm guessing you've got to FTP them. If you get the FTP software setup on your computer, WHCC should be able to walk you through the uploading process (even if you've never FTP'd before).

In all seriousness, I know it can seem quite foreign if you've never tried it, but once you get it setup and working it's relatively easy. I'm sure even an "old Harley rider" could do it" Also, I'm probably not your typical Busa (sportbike) guy, as I've been riding for 25 years and I'm in my late 30's.

I use ws_ftp which has a small cost but at the office I sue filezilla that Scott recommended and it works good as well and is FREE. Here's the link to download a free copy of filezilla: http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla
