Sales: Projector vs. TV - 09-01-2011, 08:10 PM

I'm opening consultation room #2 in a different part of town. In my current space, presentation is done on a large flatscreen tv. The colors are very vibrant, I love it, it totally works, blah blah blah.

Everyone is falling all over themselves about projection sales. I'm wondering if I should consider going with a projector or just another TV (ain't broke, don't fix it) in the new space.

On another pro board, those using TV's are saying that when they went to projection, they weren't as happy with the colors and depth. I realize that there's a wide variance in quality where projectors are concerned, and you've got to go with quality if you want to show your work to its fullest potential.

I can get a great 40-something inch tv for a lot cheaper than I can get most projectors. I'm not going into people's homes and projecting, it would always be the same consult room... so portability is not a concern of mine.

Thoughts, anyone? I pretty much have zero idea where projectors are concerned, other than a few guidelines. I'm big on trying before I buy, and not sure where I can do that with projectors.

The biggest advantage of projectors is the portability (although in your case its not applicable) and the bigger display size.

If you can proof on a one-to-one scale, it removes the guess work from the client. The colors and vibrancy is just secondary because you earn more if you can sell bigger prints.

Not sure what brand of projectors you were looking at but you can get decent projectors for $400 and less, like say an Optoma.

I was always told to project the photos into a framed canvas on the wall so that the client can see what it would look like. I was also told to start with the biggest size you could project and sale downward.

I switched from a projector to TV because I found myself constantly explaining to them that the colors would be better in the final print.. that the projector was poor at color.. and felt like I was losing sales because of that deficiency.
