Re-Launching biz as personal name: New DBA required? - 09-20-2011, 01:06 AM

I already have a DBA for my business name. However I'm re-launching my business as my personal name. My question is: Do I need to get a new DBA or not?
Some say I do not need a new DBA.

I think yes, I do. Otherwise how would the IRS differentiate between business sales tax and personal income tax etc?

Can anyone give some insight into this?

Thanks in advance.

DBA is name only, has nothing to do with taxes.

Yo need to update your EIN with the IRS, not get a new DBA. Assuming this is a sole proprietorship, they will keep the same EIN associated with you/your social, and change the name. You don't need a DBA if you are using your name, in the company title. As for the IRS knowing what is what. You need to maintain separate bank accounts, records, and credit cards. This will easily allow you to keep things manageable until filing time.

Do You Need a New EIN?
From that link: "Generally, businesses need a new EIN when their ownership or structure has changed. Although changing the name of your business does not require you to obtain a new EIN, you may wish to visit the Business Name Change page to find out what actions are required if you change the name of your business. The information below provides answers to frequently asked questions about changing your EIN.
Sole Proprietors

You will be required to obtain a new EIN if any of the following statements are true.

You are subject to a bankruptcy proceeding.
You incorporate.
You take in partners and operate as a partnership.
You purchase or inherit an existing business that you operate as a sole proprietorship.

You will not be required to obtain a new EIN if any of the following statements are true.

You change the name of your business.
You change your location and/or add other locations.
You operate multiple businesses."

Stephene you led me to the right google serach terms with the "EIN" Phrase. Thanks everyone for your help!

Hello Sam. Looks like you already have your answer here. DBA = Doing Business As. It is used to associate a business name with the business owner and is only filed at the county level.

Some banks require a DBA or articles of incorporation to open a business account. I will say one thing. DO NOT INTERMINGLE MONEY. What I mean is do not put your business money into the same bank account as your personal money. This is the quickest way to headache. Mixing personal money with business money is just asking for a headache in the event of an IRS review.

Lastly, keeping detailed accounting records is always a good idea and highly recommended in any business venture.

I am not sure you are required to but updating your tax id. information is a good idea.
