Question about selling a digital negative - 11-22-2011, 03:23 PM

I had an image for sale on Etsy that I took of Bass Hall. Today I received a message from a church stating that they would like to use my image in a christmas bulletin. The problem is I have never sold a digital print before so I have no idea how much to charge and if I need to restrict to a one time use agreement. Any help is much appreciated.

Well, it makes a big difference who is asking and what specifically they are asking for. How large of a file are they needing? What type of rights do they want?

I am assuming that this will be a relatively small image for use on a folded piece of paper only. I typically charge about the price of an 8x10 for a small/personal use image. This isn't exactly personal use, but it also isn't a billboard marketing campaign. Plus it is a not-for-profit entity and I usually give them the benefit of the doubt (unless it is a mega church with tens of thousands of members). I would probably price it about the same as a 16x20 in this case. A bit more than a normal personal use image, but not nearly a full commercial use price.

Use the opportunity to your advantage if you can. Those church members could be turned into future clients. Be personable with your contact person and make your rate reasonable (to reflect how reasonable your future endeavors with them will be) and do some prospecting. Best of luck.

If you decide to give it away or sell it for a reduced price for charitable purposes be sure to put a fair market value on it then discount it so they and prospective clients know the true value of your work, otherwise expect everyone to expect that price.

Who owns Bass Hall? Are you sure you have the lawful right to sell images of it? Some buildings are copyrighted, some are licensed to specific photographers, etc. Check before you leap.

Ditto -- without a location release you are opening yourself up all kinds of legal risks (and kill whatever you may make on the sale :-/.
