When you're doing offsite work for a company that involves several days of travelling and shooting, do you prefer to charge a flat daily rate that includes your time and image use licenses? Or do you charge a daily creative rate in addition to a separate rate for each image that your client purchases?

I have always had a flat day rate, it is down alot in this new world of low prices. In the 70's and 80's it was 3600.00 now I am down to 1600.00, to this day rate (6 hours), to this day rate I bill for expenses (travel, scouting, equipment rental, assistants ect. My day rate has always included one-time use of images captured, other use rates are also offered if needed. I must add that as much as 60% of my studio's income is from commerical work in the last few years.

Thanks Wayne. For days that you go over your limit of 6 hours, do you charge an additional fee?

Day rate plus travel expenses. If I am traveling because of the job, day rate is restricted to a strict 8 hours.. if more than that on any given day, they pay an additional half day rate. (Negotiable if not traveling.)

My day rate includes unlimited usage, but not copyright. If they insist on copyright, my rates triple for the job (but not the travel expenses).

I will do post production work on the images if requested, but if I do, that time is also billed at the same half day and/or day rate.

Curtis, Yes I do charge per hour at $289 per.
Brad, I agree with the Copyright ownership.
