Health Insurance (info for you small business owners or contract pros) - 03-06-2006, 11:11 PM

Ok so last year when i turned 23 i was forced to work at the shop full time to be eligible for full time benefits aka health insurance. i realistically want to go to part time to cut some of my hours and see about getting health insurance elsewhere.

so my question is for those of you who do this for a living, owning your own studio or whichever what are the options for health insurance.

im kind of a noob at this sort of thing.

im just getting too busy with other jorbs and assignments to have school AND 35+ hours at the shop too.

plus when summer rolls around i have to work like at least 16 hours a week, so no long vacation for me. ill have a chance to hit up NYC for about 10 days, but not if im a full timer.

opinions and help please.

For real though. I went with out insurance for about 7 lucky years. I have it now through blue cross blue shield. It's not the best, but better then nothing. Insurance companies have different plans that will suit your specific needs. For me, I have a $35 co-pay, but I only see the doctor maybe once or twice a year, so it's no big deal and my monthly payment isn't to high and is defintely better then a hospital bill or a trip to the emergency room would be with out it. *knocks on wood

I should probably hunt for something cheaper tho..... I'll add that task to my list.

I'm a contractor with an engineering company, so I'm not considered an employee that is eligible for benefits, therefore, I had to hunt down my own individual insurance for me, myself, and I. I went with Unicare, and so far, I have no complaints. I have been with Unicare for about a year now. They have LOTS of different plans to choose from, so your options aren't too limited. And for me, my premium hasn't been too bad. They have ALOT of info on their website. And some of the plans cover families too if you have a family to take care of. I would definitely recommend that you at least check their website out.

Get married to someone that works full-time at a HUGE firm and has incredible insurance . . . or cross your fingers that you don't get sick!
