Question I don't have a studio, so what do I do? - 07-05-2006, 11:13 AM

I know of several models who need some work done, but I don't have a studio. I would like to shoot them inside somewhere so I can control lighting and the weather, but I am not sure what I can do. I could probably shoot them in my house or maybe theirs.

I would like to know what fellow photographers are doing when a studio is not available.

Thanks.

Rent a studio, or shoot at home.

I just shoot at my house.

Rent one..

I've thought about shooting at the house, but I think that would come across as a little too creepy for most models at first.

You might want to look into Silver Street Studio, they do studio rentals:

I'm kind of on a budget so wanted to see if their were any alternatives to renting a studio.

I shot in my home for just under a year before making the commitment to a studio. Just make sure you are totally upfront with that fact and if your work is good enough they will come. For your protection, always have another adult female present and encourage the model to bring an escort. JMHO.

Just about the best advise anyone can give you when owning a studio or shooting females. If a minor always make sure parent is around and paperwork is signed BEFORE a single shutter is clicked. When I stopped shooting high fashion many studios were going to digital video recording of sessions for their protection, not sure if that is something I would do personally but it is an option to protect you.

I shoot from home. I let everyone know that my home is my studio ahead of time. I also tell them that they are allowed to bring one friend with them. This in return helps you out by attracting more people to see your work, then more business you get.

Soon enough i will have to build a room extension to my house to accomidate a full size studio. Right now i am limited to a 10x18 space. So it can get crammed up pretty fast after i add the lighting and props, and so on.

I also will shoot at thier house to, or location. I normally charge a travel fee for these. This depends on how far them live from me.

I hope this clears out some of the questions you had.

Regards,

AG

Check out local hotels. Lobbies make some killer backdrops. (Be prepared to send a little "bonus" to the manager.)

Man THAT was funny! LOL

Oh, I shoot on location at homes/parks and occasionally at my home. I try not to use the home though...but good advice for those that do posted above.
