Question commercial photo for website - 07-13-2006, 09:42 AM

Hi everyone,

A web developer friend of mine has asked me to shoot a photo to be used commercially on her client's website. I have no idea how to price something like this. Has anyone else had experience with this and would you be interested in giving me some ideas and/or guidelines?

Thanks,
Kim

This is a tough one. Is it a new website? If so, you could charge, say 5% of the web design cost. If it's an existing website you'll definitley need to know what kind of traffic it does. Also, how big is the pic and where will it be.

Thanks, Shane. I'll ask some more questions. Anyone else have any advice?

Really it comes down to what is the picture of? Is it a shot that will take a couple hours setting up lites in studio and test shooting dozens of shots to come up with the perfect lit shot or is it shooting a specific building or other object outdoors where you may have to go back to the location several times to get the right sky into the shot?

With the information that you give there is no real way to price out your work.

If it is a shot that you can knock out in 20 minutes with 20 minutes post production work you would price it lower than one that will take you hours to do.

True..but there should be two parts to your price. 1. your day rate (or a portion of dependng on how long it takes to produce) and 2. Usage charges.
