Want to talk about getting a studio? (North side of Houston) - 08-20-2006, 01:02 PM

Well I thought I'd throw this out there. I'm sure there are alot of people out there that have thought about this. I've been taking studio protraits for some time now but I'm tired of setting up all my stuff in the house. I'm sure there are alot of you that would love to have a place to take pictures at.

I'm thinking a few of us on the northside of town get together and rent a place (small warehouse or something?). I know there would have to be some trust involved in sharing a place. I have about 14 or more backdrops and lots of props, lights, softboxes, stands of all kinds. I think by going in on a place we could use each others props and backdrops... I'm always wanting fresh ideas with the props and for us who might not do this type of thing for a living could us some help. It gets costly buying new things all the time.

Not in a real big hurry but maybe a few of you have been thinking the same thing for some time? PM me your thoughts or ideas.

-Tracy

Hi Tracy,

That is a very interesting idea. I do the same as you. I do a lot of on location shoots, but also studio type with backdrops, etc in my house. Oh, how I would LOVE to have a studio to shoot in. How North of Houston are you talking? I am in The Woodlands, just North of Spring. I honestly don't know if this is something my business could even afford at this point, but I really like the idea of sharing to cut some of the overhead for us.

Lets meet sometime for lunch and talk about it. Im on the southside of the woodlands. I'm thinking all we need is a clean warehouse.... a/c and power. We set up a high key and low key area... place to store some props. You have any idea who much room I'd have in my house if I had a place to store props? -Tracy

i had been thinking about the same thing but in Harlingen Tx.
My spin would be to create a photography club where all the members could share a studio space and the dues of the club membership would help pay for the studio space.

Ultimately there would have to be someone who signs the lease and takes out liability insurance. A communal setup would be great if there was a volunteer to take charge of the place. I am trying to find some working photographers in the Houston Heights area that need a studio but not on a rent by the hour thing. Committing to a one year sublease at around $400 a month bills included. Anyone interested?

I might be interested also, but I'll be on my way back from Corpus on Sunday at noon, could you PM me cliffnotes of the meeting?
