Rates for shooting an album cover - 08-22-2006, 11:15 PM

I ahve been recently approached by a friend to shoot some publicity stills and possible album (CD) cover for his son. I have a great location and numerous shots planned but I want to cover myself as far as rights and fees. A retired professional photographer advised me to charge an hourly rate, a location fee and then a rights release fee for each photo used by the record company. Is anyone familiar with this and possibly suggest forms that I can use so I don't get screwed. I'm not looking to take this guy to the cleaners but he's working with some pretty big record labels and I don't want to loose my assets with this.

If he actually is carried by a major label you should be paid a couple thousand or more for a CD cover and inner photographs while if he is a just being shopped you can cut down your fees by a major %.

Be sure to get liner notes on the CD for your work!

What about forms/contracts that I can use for releasing rights for the photos. I'd like to charge a set price for each photo per use but don't know how to word that.

Go to amazon and look for "Concert Photograpy: How to Shoot and Sell Music Business Photographs". Lots of music industry advice and I think it may have some forms, not sure though.
