Embossing your prints - 08-24-2006, 08:34 PM

Do you do this?

If so, does your lab take care of it, or do you?

I'm speaking of the studio logo in the lower corner of hte portraits (proofs especially).

I'd like to begin doing this on my proofs... but reallyhave no clue where to start.

Do you mean actual embossing (raised or lowered lettering) or just the logo in the corner?
Hey, you changed your photo.

yes, i changed my photo... that's one of my very very very first bridals ever.
i decided if a self-portrait was going to be my avatar, i needed a better one. i'm not feeling cute this week so you get the bride instead ;)

i would like the actual embossing... like where the logo is in the corner of the picture (either raised or imprinted) in a gold or silver foil. i don't necessarily want to do it to all my prints, but i would like to do this tot he proofs. i'm not crazy about stamping them "PROOF" or messing up the print so that they have to order from me-- but if they are going to display it i want my company name to be on the photo somewhere. and i don't want to have to photoshop it onto every single print.

if i had an embosser, i could get my daughter to do it. real cheap and eager labor.

Have you talked with the lab where you get your prints done? Or are you doing them all yourself?

I did some research into this yesterday and it looks like way more effort and expense than it is worth. I'd have the lab do it (expensive machine). Unless I missed some awesome, cheap product that does gold/silver embossing?

i almost wonder how photos would stand up to a heat embossing gun (where you stamp w/ embossing fluid/gel and then shake a fine powder over the embossing fluid... then the embossing gun melts the powder into a foil-looking fliud design).

argh.

Kasey,

It isn't exactly embossing. It is Hot Foil Stamping and you can get an economical machine that you do yourself.

Veach Company is the supplier and they have been in the business for many years. If a lab does actual gold/silver foil stamping, they will usually have a Veach Co. Machine. You can actually get several other foil colors as well...red, blue, green, black, copper etc. and not just the standard gold/silver.

Cost is about 440.00 for the machine, then you would have a typeset and or logo. Depends upon what you want to do. Foil is relatively inexpensive and will do alot of prints. If you have specific questions, just fire away. I use Veach and have for a while. Good place to get this product from and they are experts in the field.

Clayton,

I use PS for logo on SOME of my work...but for the premier stuff, I always use the Gold Foil Stamping as it has always been a symbol of high quality portraiture and Studio work. Once you get a nice logo or name die and see it in Gold Foil, PS'ing it just deosn't look as nice.

Kasey,

The machine is really small. it has a footprint of about 5x7" and is easy to move and use. At least the smaller one is. You really wouldn't want anything other than that I don't think.

A hundred years ago, I had a "hot pen" that you laid a piece of gold foil on the photo, and wrote the name free hand. It was rally cheap, but if you are any kind of artist, it was like signing your name.
