Help - How much to charge? - 08-28-2006, 05:36 PM

While taking pictures this past weekend at the NASA Ballunar Festival, I was approached by one of the companies sponsoring several of the balloons. I had just taken some shots of two balloons right after lift off skimming across the lake side by side and they raised back up just before the shoreline. Water came pouring out of one of the baskets. I turned around and someone from the company stopped me, asked if I was affiliated with anyone and gave me his name and phone number and told me to call him if the shots came out. He said that the head of the company was in one of the balloons. Needless to say, I was thrilled. I called him today and he is still interested in seeing my shots. I am going to e-mail him a proof sheet to see which pictures that he would be interested in. I have no clue on how much to charge them for the shots, either hard copies or electronic copies.

What do you think would be a fair price?

I think the main thing you want to find out is the usage and circulation if they are going in printed material. I have a program that can give you a market range once you determine that.

1) subjective question, the ones that he saw me take are somewhat unique with the water shots, all are in focus, proper exposure, morning light taken with 100-400L zoom.
2) I sent them cantact sheet with about 75 pictures of various shots
3) Not sure if they want to use them for themselves or use them in advertising

Indeed. It's not the end-all-be-all, but it provides a subjective place from which to begin negotiations, IMHO.
