Event Photography/model release? - 09-06-2006, 06:14 PM

Lots of questions, in the past I've shot film for events and given the event holder prints/negative/whatever we agreed upon and never seen them again. I've never used them for my site or anything because I don't know how model releases work outside of a portrait experience.

SO, I'm going to do my next event on digital and I was planning to upload them to some kind of site where attendants can order them directly so I don't have to do the prep work for each individual order. I'd like to still give rights to images for the event holder to use in brochures and promotional material. So my questions:

1- can I use any images I take for promotion of my event photography? It is impossible to get a model release from everyone inolved and in attendance.

2-Is there a place I can upload the images to be ordered where everything is handled for me, and any profits come to me? Print quality being very good of course.

3- How would you suggest I give rights to the images to the event holder only? Sign a copyright release in the coordinator's name?

I am not a lawyer, but I play one on the internet......

If you are selling photos of people at an event to the people who were in the event , you would not need a model release. If you use the photos for your personal advertising you MAY need a model release. Most of us do not get one. If you use photos of people to advertise Coke or vacuum cleaners you NEED a model release. We shoot events all the time, give the sponsors photos of the event, and sell the individual photos to those interested.

Take a look at Exposure Manager, they are a TPF sponsor. Their interface is not horribly complicated, and they give you the option of printing the photos yourself, or having a commercial lab print and mail them for you. You set your own prices, packages, etc.

For example click here and go to ballet and pw is margo

They are very responsive to inquiries, and I have never had a quality complaint .

I will second exposuremananger I have been using them for about 4 months and have not had a single complaint. It is easy to use and not a lot of hassle for me.

Don't gorget to throw in Collages for your online hosting. Like most of the other online hosting companies, your choices are endless. You print, they print, etc. Also, you can look here in the business section for a listing of online hostint/selling services. Hope that helps.
