Licensing rates for specialty items - 09-08-2006, 11:03 AM

I receivied an email from a gentleman representing a company out of Honk Kong that distributes small glass magnets, pushpins, and wine charms. He inquired about using one of my photos for a glass magnet. When I emailed him back to ask him about the licensing rate structure that his company uses, he replied that they do not yet have a rate structure, as this is the first time they are going to try to use photos (as opposed to graphic designs). So...again the ball is in my court.

I saw somewhere online that they claimed that they move between 300,000 and 500,000 units a month, however, it seems like they have hundreds of different designs. Does anybody have an idea about licensing rates for these types of specialty items? I'd really appreciate the input!

Thanks. :)

Hi Katya,
hmmm, not sure what buttons would go under for licensing. It sounds like the company is not used to licensing, so they might freak at the cost. Have you liscenced your images before and have a standard contract for all that?

If not, an easy way to get a round about quote is to go to gettyimages.com or sone of the other major stock houses and put in all the info on one of thier rights managed images and see what it comes out to. Granted, you have have to call a rep there if there since I'm sure they don't have a "button" catagory. Keep in mind the quote is for stock imagery and not custom, so your price should be more.

A good place to start the negotiating anyways...
