Preparing and Printing Proof Sheets - 09-13-2006, 02:52 PM

How do you guys handle printing proof sheets? Do you print them on your own, or do you have someone else do it? Also, about how many images do you put on each sheet?

I'm tempted to handle this on my own with my own Photojet printer, but I'm curious as to how much attention I should be paying to the final printed product (proof sheet). I mean, after all, this is just a proof sheet, right? Also, how much post processing do you do prior to presenting the proof sheet to the client? Minor touch-ups and cropping only, or do you do more?

Thanks so much for your help and advice.

I let Millers Lab do my proof sheets. I am using their 10x13 sheets, spiral bound with 12 images per page.

Mpix offers the same book as Millers, but at a lower price. Doesn't make any sense to me why, but it's true.

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Specially when Millers is just the "pro's only" side of the same company as Mpix.

Let's say that you do somoene's senior pics. How do you know which shots to include on the proof sheets? Or, do you just include every image you shot? That seems like it could get waaay expensive.

When I give proofs (sometimes I give CDs and watermark my images) I order them from Mpix. I've ordered the spiral bound from Mpix for a Senior and she loved it.

I fix any exposure problems and a little touch up. Oh, I also crop. Obviously you want them to want those pictures and most of your customers won’t be able to envision the final product otherwise. Know what I mean?!

I have never given a customer every image I shot. I pick out the ones I like first (after all, it's my name going on it) then those I think they will enjoy/buy and give them those choices to pick from. I normally give a really good selection. Every once in a while Ill have someone ask "where is that pose we did" and Ill explain those images weren’t worthy (basically).
