charge for image use on wedding invites? - 09-28-2006, 07:14 PM

I recently did a shoot for a couple and have sent them the prices for ordering prints. They asked what the charge would be for use one of the images for their wedding invites. It will actually be printed on the invites and not a loose print. Sooooo, what should I charge?

thanks!

Are you doing their wedding also? If so then I would try to work it into the package somewhere with them. I guess I would start with what you would charge for that many wallet sized images. Adjust accordingly if you are or are not shooting their wedding. Just a thought....

We charge $ 49.00 for a contrast and color corrected, minimally retouched 4X5 @ 200 dpi on a CD. It includes a copyright release stating the usagage. If we are doing the wedding one image on a CD for newspaper is included. Being such a nice guy I would also let them use it for their invitations for free.

I'd make it a minimal charge if they added your contact info "Photo by ..... www.xxxxxx.com" on the invitation back. And give you a couple of copies for your portfolio.

Being that I'm in business to make money and not friends...I'd definitely charge them even if it's nominal. Sometimes I charge based on a % of the cost of the project (when buy rates aren't applicable). 3-5% is pretty average for commercial photography. So if the budget for invitation printing was $100...then I'd charge $5.

Fair is all people really ask for.

Will they let you use that at the store to pay for your groceries??

I don't shoot weddings, so that's not a consideration. I know what I would charge for a commercial shoot for something like this, but it would be quite a bit more than what they are expecting I'm sure.

Do you have a standard fee for releasing an image for reproduction? I would think that's what this falls under. You are basically not going to get any print purchases from this image as a result.

No, I don't have a set price for image release. I do mostly commercial work and the portrait work I do is priced differently (based on print purchases) so just not sure hwo to charge for this. I think I'm going to say something like $300.

Does anyone have a set price that they use for something like this?
