Getting Photos In Magazines - 10-14-2006, 04:40 PM

I'm really new to photography as a business, so bear with me please

I was wondering if anyone knows how I would go about showing some of my work (nature photos) to magazines or possibily publishing a book or calendar. I guess I just would like to get some of my shots seen, but I don't know how to do that. I gather it's really difficult, but I don't even know where I would start.

Any advice, guidance or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Many magazines will have submission guidelines (and maybe even photographic "want" lists) available on their website. If not you may be able to find out who the photo editor is inside the print magazine and call/email them asking for submission info.

I think books and calendars are more difficult to break into, but if you want to go that route I would think you'd need to research the publishers in the genres that your work would be appropriate for and contact them.

Books such as this one can also be helpful in helping you find potential opportunities.

You can always publish your own book or calendar. There are many outfits out there that will get you started. I did a calendar last year and gave one to everyone in the family as Xmas presents. I am thinking about putting together a book of my work, and doing the same this year.

I guess I'd better get rolling !!

Good luck..

Thank you so much! This info will be a big help! That book looks like it will be a good investment too. I really do appreciate your tips here!
