I took pictures at the Space City 10 Mile Race today. I just wanted to get pictures of my wife and her friend but I ended up getting about 200 shots. Someone already has the contract for the race and I don't wanna undercut the guy. There were quite a few people interested in their pictures but I don't really care to make anything. I can't give them away for free because that's worse for the other guy than if I were to charge for them. I can contact the other guy and offer to sell them to him. They're not worth much because I was using a crappy lens and it was my first time to shoot anything sports related.

What should I do? How much should I ask for if I offer to sell them? Is it wrong to say "either you buy my pictures or I give them to your customers for free"? The guy is trying to make a living and I don't wanna be like that.

This is a public event? Anyone can take photos. As long as you don't claim affilitation with the sponsoring organization, I don't see what problem you would have in selling your work to those who are interested. If you were to put an ad in the local running magazines saying you had shot the event, and were selling your shots, I might feel differently. If someone approaches you to see if you have a shot of them, it is your property and you can do as you please.

I shoot many events for organizations. When the local paper photog shows up, I don't tell them that I am contracted for the event and they can't shoot. I try to expedite their needs and go on about my work. If the customer doesn't want any other photogs at their event, it is their responsibility to take care of it.
