Pricing question - 10-16-2006, 12:48 PM

I have been freelancing for a local publication that has a local circulation of about 80,000 on a weekly basis. I have had multiple large photos on the cover, and some of the photos have been run in multiple editions. I am paid a set price for each photo, regardless of size or # of runs, which is contrary to the initial agreement (verbal unfortunately). I was wondering what a fair price for the photos would be, and should I charge different rates for multiple runs and covers? I definitely think I am being underpaid right now...

Thanks,
Jason

Well, I would start by asking for the agreement in writing. This would give you some leverage and allow all parties to know what the agreement is. Helps to keep honest people honest. And people/biz's know where the line is drawn.

Please keep in mind that this is MPO. YMMV. Sorry, I don't feel I can't assist with your pricing questions... But, hope this helps

A standard fee for 1 pic when I was a stringer for a group of weeklies in St. Louis was $35. It didn't matter how many papers it ran in that was the set price per photo. That was 10 years ago though. Unless you have some sort of usage agreement, once you sell them the photo they can use it as often and in as many publications as they wish.
