Start of my copyright watermark(thoughts wanted) - 10-27-2006, 11:25 PM

I haven't been adding a copyright to my photos but I am going to. Here is what I have come up with so far. I know the copyright symbol is to big. I am going to fix that.

I'm not a huge fan of lens flares... and the stroke is going to make it hard to see when it's very small. I would probably reduce the size of the stroke some and perhaps space the characters farther apart.

Thanks for you comments daniel. I am not sure what you mean by stroke though.

btw I will be making this into a brush when doing the actual copyright so the lens flare and dark background will go away

I would place the © on the front not the rear.

The copyright symbol should be before the name. It's a good idea to put the year in the copyright as well, either in your IPTC data, that should always include copyright info, or the watermark. As for the copyright itself, I prefer to use my website address in the copyright so that if someone wants to find the photographer, they know exactly where to go from the watermark itself. That's a personal preference. Simplicity in the watermark itself is usually best so I would use either your trademark symbol in some type of embossed format as a new layer for your watermark or simple text that is easily readable.

Watermark is very much personal taste. So not sure what I think is applicable to you. But here is my opinion.

Keep it simple. I see you have used white outline along with gradient text. Good to have contrasting outline and color of text, seems like you have done that. I assume your watermark will not have black background. But your text seems to be complex, with block letters. Try to make it small and try it on different color background. Block letters will start merging into each other when you make it small.

Here is mine with three different backgrounds.

I believe the copyright office prefers this format

copyright "circle c" year name

You should think about copyrighting under your own name, otherwise the copyright would belong to your website if you use this and not you.

The copyright belongs to the owner of the website and company unless the website is also the incorporated name of the company.

All copyright notices must include the © symbol (or the word copyright or its abbreviation) as well as the date of first copyright and the name of the person the work is copyrighted to or an identifiable alternative that designates that person as the owner (a website name would fall under this category).

If your website is your name and owned by you, use of your website name in your copyright does not transfer copyright of the work to the website and copyright remains yours and yours alone.

This from the copyright office as to what the form of copyright notice must be:

Form of Notice for Visually Perceptible Copies

The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all the following three elements:
1. The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word “Copyright,” or the abbreviation “Copr.”; and
2. The year of first publication of the work. In the case of compilations or derivative works incorporating previously published material, the year date of first publication of the compilation or derivative work is sufficient. The year date may be omitted where a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery, jewelry, dolls, toys, or any useful article; and
3. The name of the owner of copyright in the work, or an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a generally known alternative designation of the owner.
Example: © 2006 John Doe
The “C in a circle” notice is used only on “visually perceptible copies.” Certain kinds of works—for example, musical, dramatic, and literary works—may be fixed not in “copies” but by means of sound in an audio recording. Since audio recordings such as audio tapes and phonograph disks are “phonorecords” and not “copies,” the “C in a circle” notice is not used to indicate protection of the underlying musical, dramatic, or literary work that is recorded.

lose the upside down reflection of the name...if you made this into a brush all of the stroke and what not would leave, but do space them a little further apart...
