This scans at a higher DPI than they offer and since you are working with just 35 mm and not 120 you wouldn't need the more expensive 9000 model that they offer.
After scanning your slides/negatives you could offer to do friends photos for them at a reasonable price or sell the unit on Ebay and get about 1/2 to 2/3rds of your money back. Just know that the scanner does take your time but it can be working in the background while your on the computer and you can get an attachment that allows you to load several slides in at a time.
Now if you shot a lot of Kpdachrome you need to use the 9000 because it handles the emulsion better than the V.
