I've never had the problem with a portrait session. And the one wedding I've been to with all my professional gear (that I wasn't hired for) was a high school friend's in October. She originally asked me to shoot it, but told her that I wanted to attend, not work.... anyway, the photographer she ended up hiring was shooting film and taking a traditional approach (i.e., very few shots before or during the ceremony.. formals.. and a handful at the reception). I ended up shooting the ceremony almost as I would have if I'd been working it (from my pew LOL) just so she'd have some additional to choose from... but I was very careful to not duplicate shots of the Pro and made a point to introduce myself before the ceremony (and make sure he didn't have a problem with me doing any shooting... professional courtesy).
