So, I thought since there are a lot of newbie lurkers around here, I'd post this. We typically focus on stylized fine art portraiture. Once in a while, someone sees our work, loves it, and begs us to cover an event for pennies.

As you all know, I have sucker written on my forehead and usually say yes (if time permits). I like helping people out. The thing is, every time I have done this it has come back to bite me on the butt. It doesnt matter if it was a sob-story wedding, helping out our local airmen, church, or fellow alumni. The lower sticker price and the exceptions, seem to give people the feeling of...since you gave an inch, they will gladly take a mile. I hate that part.

Our studio has a certain style. Its a little edgy for this area. My last act of good will was loved by the 20-year-old somethings (who were the ones that hired me), and the rest of the group is still freaking out. My good will earned me 3 super happy people and a handful of old grumpy people that thought they were getting snapshots. (We don't do snapshots - I feel like if you want a crumby photo of yourself, go to the DMV. I don't do DMV photography...I refuse!)

Anyway, newbies, stick to your policies, prices, and what have you. Exceptions make way for more exceptions - and then it never ends...its all downhill from here!

I can't agree more. Holly's learned this the hard way, and it hurt... stick to your guns and you'll avoid most of the headaches.

It just stinks - you can't be nice to people. People seem to equate being nice with the smell a of sucker. Then its like trying to pry a porcupine off a cactus...it just hurts!

I decided that I will be "formally nice" and offer my services to an organization that need them. I'm not doing it on a per person case any more. How many times can you get bit on the butt in 1 year? (and still be able to sit down)

Made me laugh because I did a corporate shoot a month or so ago where one of the execs needed a passport photo and asked if I could take a quick shot since he was there anyway. After taking a look at the INS site it was clear to me what they wanted.... Just about the most unflattering frontal shot you can get. Yeah, I took the shot and it looked almost as bad as the example so I'm sure the INS will love it.

It was a good example for the client though, he could easily see what good lighting and a bit of listening to the photographer can do for ones camera appearance!

He was happy and the check cleared!
