Question. Sell image for artists reference - 01-31-2007, 10:13 AM

I have one very valuable pintail in flight image, so they said :) I want to make sure i got the price right.

Another out of ordinary request i got today, an artist i don't know email me about this image and wish to purchase for artist reference. Painting i suppose. Full resolution.

How would you price a quote like that??

Thanks

Watch out, that image will be all over the place on posters if you release that full rez file to this "company" unless they are a legit agency. AS to the artist- NO WAY! Too many countries ignore copyright laws and if it is that rare and good of a shot unless you get all of your money and it clears the bank (give up to 3 weeks for international transfers after the transfer) don't release that file! Story just on the news this past week where a group out if Nigeria have gotten very good at faking US POSTAL MONEY ORDERS, you really have to look for certain features that they have not quite managed to duplicate yet such as watermarks in the paper to tell them from the real thing-not a casual or even moderate inspection.

So if it is that good shop the pic to some birding magazines.

Thanks for the advice, i'm worrying about that part too.

He made further contact with website and credibility, but i will double check a possible fraud or if he indeed interested in my high price quote.

I'm an artist/ painter...they dont need a full res image to use as reference. That sounds odd to me.

I've sold images to an artist friend of ours for reference in a piece he was making. Full-res images were never even discussed. I sold him the low-res files and he keeps them on his laptop simply for reference in the posing I used. The only reason that they would need full-res images would be if they intended to print them for any reason. Maybe size the image down to a 300dpi 4x6 sized print so that they can print it to put on their easel as they paint? I wouldn't give them anything bigger than that though. Just my 2 cents worth...

I don't sell photos to artist so they can copy it in their paintings. If I did I would make sure I got a high price for it.
