printer for CD's - 02-05-2007, 08:51 PM

Anyone know of a consumer printer that can print on a CD or DVD? I just bought some quality DVD's that have a white printable surface. The thing is, my labels that I am currently using won't stick to them because of the surface. I know the cheapest and easiest thing to do is just order some different DVD's but I was wondering what printer can actually print on these. Any ideas?

I have an Epson R200 that does it.. Less than $100 and does a fine job. I do believe there is a newer model out now. I think the r340 that David mentioned might be the one to get..

The one thing I do not like about these printers - The ink is not waterproof and will smudge with any moisture (sweat, etc..) When I used to do DVD video production, I'd take the ink printed DVDs and spray them with a matte spray from a craft store. Worked like a charm.

those are good, and I have been looking into burners that come with LightScribe. Even though it has no color, I still think it is pretty cool.

I use a Samsung DL external DVD burner with Lightscribe. It's pretty cool.. However the media is much more expensive, it takes about 20min to burn a cover and the contrast of the print is not all that great. That said, if I want to just create a single decent looking CD/DVD without the hassle of ink print, it fits the bill. I have downloaded a contrast booster mod that supposed to help the lightscribe a bit. Haven't tried it out yet though.

The Epson pigment printers are what you want but they're not cheap. They use pigments instead of dye ink and are more resistant to moisture.

The R800 goes for about $400.00.

I have one and use it to print on DVD's and the quality is quite good.

Here's a review on the R800.

Yep. The R800 is very similar to the R200 but uses the pigment based ink. My friend has that printer. Another thing I have found about the pigment based printers (in particular, my R2400), they are not nearly as prone to head clogs as the standard dye based..Such as my R200. It may be a fluke, but I have owned too may epson printers to name over the years and all had terrible head clogging problems when they hadn't been used for a week or 2... I have not had any of the same experiences with my R2400 though. Not sure if it's the heads, the K3 ink or what. The nice thing about pigment ink too is the fact that it comes off the printer dry.
