Copyright question. - 03-09-2007, 10:24 AM

Hi,
I hope I posted this question at the correct forum/category.
I know this might sound a little bit silly but I just wanted to make sure.
I worked in a photography studio before. And the photographer/owner once said to me,"...the photographs that you took at any weddings, those are YOUR work, you can put them in your portfolio."
And now I am designing my own website, hoping it will bring me some business (I am no longer working in that studio), I am wondering if I can use those images on my website? Am I going to be in any copyright related toruble?

Thanks!

Did you sign anything w/ your previous employer that stated you could never use them in your own portfolio if you left them?

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you'll also need to obtain some sort of permssion in writing from the person in the image before posting on your website. Unless the face is not easily recognizeable. Not sure if the permission they signed specifically to the studio's contract extends to your own website.

just to cover your arse, get it in writing.

There are several different scenarios involved here...If you use their gear then then can actually claim all images, if it was a combination of their and yours then it gets murky.

Sounds like previous employer is a good sport, but you need to make sure you don't have images of the same brides on your site and his.
