Great points, Shelby.

For example, I recently stopped shooting triathalons--another company was hiring me to shoot them and hand off a card. I had to factor in several things to decide if it was worth it to me:

-What I was being paid ($50 an hour, but had an offer to go to $75. Average time paid--about 3 hours)
-Wear and tear in equipment (takes a LOT of actuations per event)
-Call time (usually 7 AM on a weekend morning)
-Drive time (not paid, an averaging about 1.5-2 hours round trip)
-Time away from my family on the weekends
-Marketing opportunities (virtually none)

Some would like to pick up an extra 150-225 bucks on the weekend, and only look at it as "do I or do I not want the extra cash". But after I pay taxes on that, it just wasn't worth it for me to continue.

Anyone who would sell their work for $4.50 per 8x10 must have been dropped on their head when they were a baby. I shoot a lot of kid's sports because I enjoy it (I have 4 grandchildren who play). I sell my work for $12.50 per 8x10 and & $9.00 per 5x7. For those who complain about the price, I remind them that I have over $2,000 tied up in a camera and over $2100 toed up in a 70-200mm f/2.8 and 1.7 tele-extender plus the filter(s) , media card(s) Epson printer, printer ink, Paper and a Sony Vaio computer . If they don't buy because of the price, I really don't care. It is my work and I will not give it away (except to my grandchildren). If they want "cheaper" prints, let them buy the epuipment and do it themselves.

Sorry if I rambled, but it irritates me to no end when when people expect something for next to nothing.

Here is something we all need to pay attention to...this is an author that is doing a documentary, talking about an incident with a movie company...another reason we should not do anything for free...the language in it might be rough for some, though...
