Has anyone used mobile credit card processing services before? I need something that works outdoors with no phone line. I will be in a small central Texas town so I'm unsure about cellular/PCS/mobile data reception - need to go test that. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rusty

When I was looking for a processor, the mobil types I could find all needed a cellular signal.
Some units had there own phone and some plugged into a cell phone. Or course this has been several years back.
I decided to go with a phone line model.

Check with Capital One Bank. They have a screaming deal on one right now if you move to them. Mine's supposed to get here this week.

Darrell and Tom,
Thanks. The phone line models are definitely more reliable. However, I am bidding on some events that are off the beaten path and would like to offer CC processing to boost sales since nobody carries cash and I don't want to fool with checks from inebriated folk. I may borrow a satellite internet rig to make it happen since I will already have computing facilities on site.
Tom, thanks for the heads-up on Capital One. I will check it out.

I use one that can be processed from any touch tone phone... costs a little more, but when you're out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but cell phone access... it works.

Brad,
The touch-tone route is attractive. How long does a transaction take using your touch-tone system? My only concern there is transaction time. Also, do you have to do a paper copy of the transaction? Also, how much more expensive is it?
Thanks,
Rusty

I am supposed to get an imprint of the card.. and it takes maybe as much as 60 seconds to run a card through.
The fee is something like $9.95 a month plus like 3.9% of the transaction.... but a lot of the time, its that or no sale at all, so it pays for itself.

I use a Nurit 8000 for events. It is small, reliable, good battery, has an offline mode if you are absolutely where you cannot get a signal and you can batch up later, has a small external modem if you want to connect to a land line, and uses Cingular as a primary and rolls to two other networks if it can't connect to Cingular.

I already have mine. I am using it at an event this Saturday night, I will give you some feedback once it is up and running.
One thing about the Capitol One deal...you have to have a cell phone with a Data Pack on it, (internet access) to process the cards. It doesn't use minutes off your plan. Depending upon your phone, you can use Bluetooth to connect and process the cards with the card reader/printer.
Here is the UNIT (In case you haven't seen it Tom.)

CJ | Got here today, and thanks again for the tip!
Bad news is no instructions at all. Just a unit in a box with some cords. I have a call in to find out what the hell I"m going to do with it.

Perfect! That looks like the solution. Thanks!
