Did a wedding last night and cought a few shots of the bride getting ready and everythiing was fine. Then we move to the church and the ceremony starts. This was a pretty small church so the walks down the aisle went fast. After the bride came down I noticed the shots didn't look right. Every shot I took was focused a few feet behind the subject. I then focused on a seated person in the church. The shot came out focues about 2 people past the one I focued on. At this time I freak a little because I just missed every shot to open the wedding, but at least I caught it then and not this morning. I ended up having to shoot the rest of the wedding with the 70-200 on my other body so I got no wide angle shots. I had to ask the bride to recreate the opening of the wedding after it was done which was a little embarassing. This morning I start checking my camera to see what was wrong and now it's focusing fine. I'm kinda confused about that. Maybe taking the battery pack and lens off had something to do with it, I'm not sure. Any suggestions on what happened?

i had a similar problem but come to find out that the lens had not locked into position. just removing the lens and re attaching solved my problem. but like you said it really freaked me out and thinking my camera was toast. | | | |

Yeah, that's what I thought at first so I took the lens off and put it back on a few times but nothing changed. Plus, I haven't had the lens off this camera for months. The only thing that has change from last night until today is I have removed the battery pack and reattached the lens. I will say that this same body gave me some trouble before by getting stuck on the center focus point. I couldn't change it to any other point other than the center. The next day I took it out and it worked fine. Again, the only thing that had changed was removing and replacing the battery pack. I don't see how a battery pack would have anything to do with the focus though.

I'm not sure what your original problem is, but removing the battery and putting it back in must be returning your settings to default settings.

OK, I got back a response from Canon about this issue. Needless to say they were no help at all. They tried to chalk it up to the fact that I was using a Sigma lens and went into this big, long spill about how their lenses aren't certified to work on Canon cameras and all this crap about the electronic signalling between the Canon camera and how the inferior Sigma lens may not recognise the latest updates in Canon technology. That's nice since I've been using this same combo for almost 2 years with no problem. However, I did recently purchase a 28-70 2.8L Canon lens for this body. I'll be curious on how they try to chalk it up to a third party lens if it happens again.

Sometimes it tends to hunt a little in low light, but it's never had a problem with back-focusing.
